Robotics Adventure: Build, Code, Compete (grades 3 - 6)
Fridays, 5:15-6:45 P.M. starting October 15 - 10 weeks
Where programming, engineering, and problem-solving come together.
What if your child's code could make a robot move, react, and complete challenges?
In this exciting hands-on robotics course, students build, program, and bring their robots to life while discovering how engineering and programming work together. Through engaging projects and challenges, students learn to test ideas, solve problems, overcome obstacles, and keep improving their designs.
Working with their own robotics kits, students explore how mechanical design, electronics, and programming come together to create intelligent machines. They write code that controls motors, responds to sensor input, and allows their robots to perform increasingly challenging tasks.
More Than Building Robots: Think Like an Engineer
Robotics gives students a fun, hands-on way to develop the skills engineers use every day: logical reasoning, creativity, persistence, and the confidence to tackle unfamiliar challenges.
Students quickly discover that successful engineering rarely happens on the first attempt. Testing, debugging, and improving become a natural — and rewarding — part of the process.
Why Robotics at MathAltitude?
Every project gives students a chance to ask questions, experiment with ideas, see what works, and try again. As they build and program their robots, they develop practical problem-solving skills while experiencing the satisfaction of turning an idea into something that actually works.
What Students Will Learn
Students will explore the fundamentals of robotics and learn how key components work together, including:
• Motors and movement
• Sensors and sensor input
• Robot controllers and hubs
• Programming movement and sensor-based behaviors
• Basic autonomous behavior
• Testing, debugging, and improving designs
Each new concept is introduced through hands-on projects that allow students to immediately apply what they have learned.
What Students Will Do
Throughout the course, students will:
• Build and program their own robots
• Test their robots, identify problems, and improve their designs
• Work through repeated build–code–test–improve cycles
• Collaborate with classmates to solve creative engineering challenges
• Explain and share their ideas with others
The course concludes with a friendly robotics competition featuring Easy, Medium, and Hard challenges. Every student has the opportunity to succeed while also being encouraged to stretch their abilities by taking on more advanced missions.
Robotics Beyond the Classroom
At MathAltitude, robotics learning extends beyond the classroom. Through our connections with local robotics teams and organizations, students have opportunities to see real competition robots, meet the people who build and program them, and experience robotics in action.
Some members of these teams are MathAltitude alumni, giving our students the chance to meet former MathAltitude students who are continuing their robotics journey at the college level. Our students have also visited WPI to explore robotics and engineering firsthand.
No Previous Experience Required
No previous robotics or programming experience is necessary.
The most important prerequisites are curiosity, a willingness to experiment, and the ability to follow multi-step instructions.
Whether your child is completely new to robotics or already loves building and creating, this course offers the guidance, encouragement, and challenge needed to help them grow.
Enrollment is limited to 8 students to ensure every participant receives individual attention and extensive hands-on experience. A minimum of 5 students is required to hold the class.

What Platform Will My Child Use?
Each student will have their own mBot2 robotics kit to use throughout the course. Using the same kit each week allows students to build on previous projects, become familiar with the hardware, and focus on solving increasingly challenging problems rather than learning a new system each class.
Families do not need to purchase a kit in advance. At the end of the program, families will have the option to purchase the kit their child has been using so learning, experimenting, and creating can continue at home.

Windows 10+, macOS 10.15+, or ChromeOS, Wi-Fi enabled
At least a 1.6 GHz processor or faster with min RAM of 8 GB.
500 MB of available storage.
Screen with a size of 1024 x 768 or larger.
Browser: Chrome 103.x, Safari 14.x, Edge 119.x, Firefox 98.x
Students can bring a mouse.
About Our Instructor
Mr. Ed Suyer has been part of our MathAltitude community for the past 12 years. He has taught Scratch programming at the elementary and middle school levels, and a Cloud programming internship program for high schoolers. Mr. Suyer is a programmer by trade and works in the industry writing code and mentoring programmers.
